As far back as he can remember, saxophonist TIM McCALL was intrigued by that big tenor sax his father kept in the bedroom closet. "I couldn't wait to get my hands on that beautiful horn. At my school, we couldn't play a wind instrument until the fifth grade. My dad insisted that I learn the clarinet first, and that I would thank him later."
Pittsburgh, PA native TIM McCALL switched from clarinet to tenor saxophone as a sophomore in high school. The following summer, he received a scholarship to attend the Eastman School of Music Summer Jazz program for high school students. Graduating from North Texas State University (now U.N.T.) in May 1989, Tim went on the road with Woody Herman's Band in July of 1989. In January of 1990, he signed on with Artie Shaw's Band which he played with on and off for eleven years.
Winning a National Endowment for the Arts Study Grant in 1992, Tim had the opportunity to study privately with jazz pianist Barry Harris. Over the years, he has studied with James Moody, Joe Viola, Joe Lavono, Lee Konitz, pianist James Williams, and Eric Kloss.
In addition to traveling with the Woody Herman Band, and the Artie Shaw Orchestra, TIM McCALL has had the great pleasure of performing with:
