Asaf Yuria was born in June 1985 and started playing the alto saxophone at the age of nine. At age thirteen he switched to the tenor saxophone, and began playing at local clubs in Tel Aviv while still a teenager. By the time he reached high school, Asaf was performing with some of Israel’s finest musicians. His mentors included Arnie Lawrens, Jess Koren, Amit Golan, Amos Hoffman, Ofer Ganor and Harold Rubin, to name a few. After graduating from the Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts Asaf performed in festivals in Cyprus with the Ofer Ganor band and in Israel’s renowned Red Sea Jazz Festival and Mitzpe Ramon Jazz Festival. During this period, Asaf was booking for the legendary Left Bank Jazz club in Tel Aviv, and taught at the Matan Jazz workshop in Arad, Israel. Asaf came to New York in 2007 to study at the renowned New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, where he took his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Jazz and Contemporary Music in January 2012. During the past years, performed with a variety of musicians including Jimmy Cobb, Kirk Lightsy, Billy Kaye, Joe Magnarely, Eddie Henderson. He also leads his own quintet which performs his original works alongside some of the great American songbook repertoire. Most recently, Asaf has become an indispensable feature of jazz maverick Omer Avital’s world-renowned quintet – an achievement that signals his arrival at the pinnacle of the jazz world.
