JOHN DOKES - JAZZ VOCALIST & SONGWRITER With a voice that echoes the smooth elegance of Nat King Cole and the soulful power of Joe Williams, John Dokes is a captivating baritone jazz vocalist and songwriter who breathes new life into classic American song. Dokes' artistry is deeply rooted in the golden eras of the '40s, '50s, and early '60s, a period he passionately embraced through his journey from a hip-hop dancer to a celebrated Lindy Hop champion and, ultimately, a distinguished singer. Dokes' approach to music is built on storytelling and connection. He doesn't rely on vocal acrobatics but rather a nuanced delivery that draws audiences in, much like the timeless performers who first inspired him. This sophisticated yet accessible style is evident across his acclaimed discography, including his debut, John Dokes Sings, George Gee Swings!, and his quintet albums, Forever Reasons (2017) and True Love (2019). His latest album, Our Day, released on his Swing Theory Entertainment imprint, showcases his versatility with a nonet featuring members of the New York-based George Gee Swing Orchestra, skillfully arranged by trombonist David Gibson. Raised in Oakland, California, Dokes’ musical foundation was laid early by his father, a rhythm and blues musician who filled their home with the sounds of Nat King Cole. His professional singing career began unexpectedly, encouraged by legendary Lindy Hopper Dawn Hampton, who heard his natural talent while dancing with him. This serendipitous push led him to join the George Gee Swing Orchestra, where he quickly blossomed into a confident and accomplished jazz vocalist. Whether performing with a big band or a more intimate ensemble, Dokes consistently delivers performances that are both deeply felt and undeniably swinging, ensuring there's never a dull moment. His dedication to craft, combined with his innate ability to connect with listeners, firmly establishes John Dokes as a compelling voice in contemporary jazz.
