Theo Hill is a jazz pianist, keyboardist and composer who has emerged as one of the preeminent young jazz artists on the New York scene. Born in Albany, NY, he began studying classical piano at the age of five with Taubman technique specialist Mary Moran. At age 12, Hill gravitated toward jazz studying piano with Lee Shaw, a protégé of Oscar Peterson, and later with Barry Harris at Manhattan School of Music. By age 16 he was performing regularly at jazz clubs in the tri-city area and made his first appearance at Smalls Jazz Club. Hill graduated from the Jazz Conservatory at SUNY Purchase in 2004 where he studied with Charles Blenzig and Hal Galper. Since moving to New York City he has performed in such venues as The Blue Note, Smalls, Mezzrow, 55 Bar, The Jazz Gallery, Jazz Standard, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, Zinc Bar, Lenox Lounge, Bill's Place, The Kitano, Minton's Playhouse, St. Nick's Pub, Smoke, Cornelia St. Cafe, Cleopatra's Needle, Sweet Rhythm, Fat Cat and Nublu. Internationally Hill has performed in Australia, Austria, Canada, Costa Rica, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Romania, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom. As a sideman he has performed with Jeff "Tain" Watts, Frank Lacy, Bill Saxton, Curtis Lundy, Gregory Porter, Victor Bailey, Roy Ayers, Lenny White, Bobby Watson, Charles Tolliver, Carmen Lundy, Wallace Roney, Jeremy Pelt and many other master musicians. He has also performed or recorded with J.D. Allen, Dave Liebman, Nicholas Payton, Marcus Strickland, Tim Green, Stacy Dillard, Wayne Escoffrey, Logan Richardson, Josh Evans, Essiet O. Essiet, Lewis Nash, Ralph Peterson and Marcus Gilmore. Hill leads his own group the Theo Hill Trio--a collective of musicians that allows him to explore and expand his compositions and musical conceptions through collective improvisation. Hill's debut record Theo Hill Quartet Live at Smalls (SmallsLive) features Dayna Stephens, Myron Walden, Joe Sanders and Rodney Green. Hill's sophomore record featuring Yasushi Nakamura and Mark Whitfield Jr. is scheduled to be released in May 2017 (Positone Records). Hill works as a bandleader and as an in demand sideman performing, recording and touring around the world. Theo also teaches privately, conducts master classes, works as a private lesson instructor at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and teaches at the Collective School of Music.
