William Tatge, pianist and composer, was born of American parents in Umbria, Italy in 1978 and lived in Florence from 1988 to 2008. He has recently moved to New York City.He began studying piano and violin at the age of six and enrolled in the Music School of Fiesole. From 1990 to 2000 he studied piano with Gabriella Barsotti at the L. Cherubini Conservatory of Florence, placing great emphasis on the 20th century repertoire. He received his degree in 2000 summa cum laude.He began exploring improvisation and jazz during his years at the conservatory: from 96 to 99 he studied privately with Stefano Bollani and participated in seminars at the Siena Jazz workshops.In these same years his passion for contemporary music led him to undertake the study of composition with Rosario Mirigliano and Romano Pezzati at the same conservatory. From 2000 to 2004 he studied orchestration with Tiziano Manca and orchestral conducting with Piero Bellugi. He also attended workshops with Ivan Fedele and Helmut Lachenmann. In 2006 he received his second conservatory diploma in composition, again summa cum laude. He continued to work on jazz piano with Enrico Pieranunzi, Franco DAndrea and Paolo Birro. He also participated as a soloist and with a trio in Stefano Battaglias seminars in Siena.He has performed in solo concerts as well as with several bands, as leader or sideman.In 2006 he joined the trio Move with Francesco Ponticelli and Dan Kinzelman.In 2008 he recorded his first album as a leader, Mutable Enclosures, with his trio featuring Piero Borri and Gabriele Evangelista. In October 2008 he was invited to perform a solo concert at Wesleyan University.Among the other musicians he has collaborated with are Ares Tavolazzi, Marco Tamburini, Ettore Fioravanti, Nico Gori, Stefano Tamborrino, Andrea Melani, Franco Nesti, Massimo Altomare, Jacopo Martini, Emanuele Parrini, Francesco Canavese, Mirko Guerrini, Marcello Allulli, Paolo Benedettini and Francesco Petreni. He has also performed with other famous musicians such as Steve Grossman and Fabrizio Bosso. He has played in various important concert seasons and festivals such as Vivere Jazz Festival, Umbria Jazz, Festival delle Colline, Grey Cat, Siena Jazz and Musicamdo. In the field of improvisational music he has collaborated, among others, with Massimo Carrozzo whom he performed with at Instants Chavirés in Paris and at the Teatro della Pergola in Florence. His pianistic style is characterized by an integration of the many musical paths he has explored over the years. From be-bop to modal jazz, from pure improvisation to classical and new music.
