Louis Armstrong, the revolutionary and highly influential trumpet player, is one of the most recognizable icons of jazz. Throughout his life he had profound musical connections with pianists who impacted his playing and career development. Trumpeter Alphonso Horne and pianist Chris Pattishall re-animate Armstrong's legacy from a unique perspective: the pianists who performed with and influenced the legendary trumpeter. From his second wife Lil' Hardin to Earl “Fatha” Hines, Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Clarence Williams, and Dave Brubeck, this program presents a broad range of Armstrong's career through the lens of these relationships. Trumpeter Alphonso Horne is a two-time Grammy nominated trumpeter named by Wynton Marsalis as one of the rising stars of the next generation. Horne has performed with many renowned jazz artists including Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Roberts, Michael Feinstein, and Rihanna. Recently named by Wynton Marsalis as one of the top five jazz musicians under 30 to watch, Chris Pattishall is quickly generating a powerful presence in the jazz world and has appeared with Wynton Marsalis, Jon Hendricks, Jimmy Heath, Donald Byrd, George Coleman, Billy Hart, Jamey Aebersold, Wycliffe Gordon, Fred Wesley, Steve Wilson, Steve Nelson, and others.
